From Dated Timber to Designer Grandeur: A Complete Staircase Transformation

The Challenge: The original orange-toned wood was visually heavy and made the hallway feel closed in. The client wanted a high-contrast, modern aesthetic. The challenge with a project of this scale is the detail—painting hundreds of spindles by hand is prone to imperfections. The client required a flawless, "built-in" look that felt like a new installation rather than a repaint.

Our Approach: While many decorators might simply sand the surface and paint over the past, we believe a flawless finish is 90% preparation.

  • The Deep Strip: We spent days—not hours—meticulously stripping back the old, thick layers of oil-based paint. Using our advanced Dustless Sanding technology, we took the woodwork all the way back to its smooth, original state.

  • Leveling the Surface: Decades of "lumpy" applications were leveled out. This process ensures that the architectural details of the spindles and handrails are crisp and sharp once again, rather than buried under layers of old product.

  • Cleanliness Guaranteed: Despite the "days and days" of heavy sanding, our vacuum-extraction system meant the rest of the home remained perfectly clean. We captured the dust at the source, allowing us to work efficiently without compromising the air quality of the house.

  • Precision Masking: To achieve the sharp "Tuxedo" look (white spindles against dark handrails/treads), we utilized surgical-grade masking to ensure perfectly crisp lines.

  • HVLP Fine-Finish Spraying: We used a specialist High-Volume Low-Pressure spray system. This is the only way to get a perfectly even coating on circular and decorative spindles without runs or brush marks.

  • Durability Where it Matters: Staircases are high-traffic areas. We used industrial-grade coatings that are resistant to the oils from hands on the rails and the scuffs of daily life.

The Outcome: The hallway has been completely opened up. By choosing a bright white for the spindles and a deep, grounding black for the accents, we’ve turned a functional staircase into a stunning architectural feature. It is a masterclass in how professional spraying can transform the largest "piece of furniture" in your house.
